Food Allergen Awareness Training for Nellsar Care Home team members

In the bustling environment of a Care Home, the well-being of residents relies heavily on the vigilance and knowledge of the team members supporting them. One crucial aspect of this care is food allergen awareness – a vital training component that ensures the safety and health of vulnerable residents.

Care Home residents often have unique dietary needs, making it essential for team members to be well-versed in identifying and managing food allergens.

The first step in Allergen Awareness Training is understanding what food allergens are. Common allergens include nuts, dairy, eggs, shellfish and gluten. Colleagues need to know how to read food labels, recognise potential cross-contamination risks, and understand the symptoms of allergic reactions, which can range from mild (rashes, itching) to severe (anaphylaxis).

Food Allergen Awareness Training equips teams with the knowledge and skills they need to protect their residents’ health by creating a safe eating environment.

I have had the pleasure of developing Nellsar’s in-house Food Allergen Awareness Training which focuses on the requirements for Care Homes and is used along with the Food Standards Agencies’ certified online training.

This week I have been to Lukestone Care Home and St Winifreds Care Home, delivering training and helping develop food allergen planning within the Homes. I’m pictured above with members of the delegate team at Lukestone during their training on Monday 27 January.
